Sunrise, Lauderhill, Tamarac and surrounding residents don’t normally have to turn up the heat during the winter months, but nationally, house fires are more common during the colder months of the year than they are at any other point.
Experts say that about 890 Americans die every year in winter house fires.. In addition to the loss of life, these fires cause injuries, property damage and the loss of important, valuable family heirlooms.
No one can prevent every house fire. Some of them are the result of natural disasters and other unpredictable events. But many house fires have predictable causes that will allow you to lower your risk.
Check out these questions to see how your fire safety knowledge stacks up.
Do you know how to handle a grease fire? Grease fires are a common hazard in kitchens. You can make these types of fires worse by putting water on them. Instead, they need to be smothered. Fire extinguishers work the best, but baking soda or a metal lid can do in a pinch.
Use candles the right way or consider switching to the battery-operated options. Don’t let candles burn when you aren’t home. Instead, be sure you blow them out before you leave the house. Also, please don’t put them in spots where your kids or pets can knock them over. If you notice that you’re having problems remembering to blow out your candles, then consider battery-operated options.
Don’t overload your extension cords. Be careful with how many things you have plugged in and that any extension cord you use is in good shape. If they’re not, it can be an electrical fire hazard.
