How is your generator?

Hurricane season is upon us, not to mention the every day occurrences of power surges and brown outs that are part of our daily lives here in South Florida.

So, what do you need to do to be prepared?

First and foremost, you need to test your generator on a regular basis. Permanent generators are usually simpler since they are on an automatic program that cycles their operation. These generators should be on a regular preventative maintenance program serviced by a generator company.

Now, let's talk about the portable generators.

Here is a simple safety checklist:

  1. Location

Make sure you locate the unit at least 10' away from any doors, windows or any other openings into your home.

  1. Avoid poisoning

You don't want to risk carbon monoxide poisoning. Install a battery type carbon monoxide unit closest to the area where fumes may enter your home.

  1. Wiring

Any cables used to connect to your home must be in good condition. Visually inspect them for any bare copper or frayed insulation. Just because it is a generator, doesn't mean it can't electrocute you!

  1. Interlink Switching

This prevents you from accidentally back feeding power back into the incoming power grid from the utility company. If you don't understand this, call us and we will explain it or give you a free inspection, making sure that your connection is safe.

  1. Voltage

Make sure you have the proper voltage going into your electrical system. If not, you can damage sensitive equipment. Most generators have a volt meter on the unit. If it doesn't read 120/240 volts, you risk problems.

These are just the basics.

As always, we're at your service 24/7. We thank you for your continued support and look forward to servicing your needs in the future.
